Long time, no update! (again!)
Hi, everyone!
I’ve gotten some new followers lately and figured I should probably, you know, update everyone on what I’m working on and up to. Like actually utilize the newsletter format instead of just forgetting about it and hoping people show up to stuff I’m doing. Wild concept!!
July ended up being a bit of a slow month for me, which was nice. Before I went out of town for a big chunk of it, I hosted an international zine month “kickoff” event at Mothership, a bar in the Mission. Attendance was spotty, but I did a lot of cool trades with the other tablers and it was nice to see friends. When I got back, I held my monthly zine nite at Tamper Room in Fremont (after skipping June) and it was cute! Four new people showed up who had never made zines before. The fire alarm went off midway through the event and they brought their materials outside and worked on their zines on the patio :-)
The biggest thing I’m working on at the moment is, of course, Bay Area Queer Zine Fest! It’s happening on September 14th at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. We also hold a virtual fest, which is from September 1st-14th this year. I have a lot of work to do to get the website set up for that, but have a great team of volunteers with me and I think things will be smooth and the in-person event is shaping up to be suuuuuuuper cute!!!!!
This month, I’m doing the following things that I haven’t made flyers for yet:
8/18: Crisis Club Zine Club at Crisis Club Gallery in Oakland
8/21: Zine Nite at Tamper Room in Fremont
8/29: Quartz Market at Dragon Rouge in Alameda
Podcast stuff is going well, too! I’m still working out my schedule for the rest of this season, but I’m three episodes in and all the chats have been really great.
Season 7, Episode 2 with A’misa and Chloe of Reed Zine Library
Season 7, Episode 3 with Ivy Rose (fresh this week!!!!)
Here is an interest form if you’re interested in speaking with me about zines on the podcast :)
I’m also uhhhhhhhhhhhh getting ready for a solo art show uhhhhhhhhhhh this October, which feels SUPER WILD. It’s called Rubber Ring and it’s going to be at Crisis Club in Oakland. More details on that hopefully sooner rather than later. And perhaps a flyer…
Okay, that’s it!
xoxo, Maira
